Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday when a hit-and-run driver rammed into a commercial tricycle, popularly called keke Marwa, along the dilapidated Mowo-Ikoga road in Badagry, leaving one market woman dead and others severely injured.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Badagry Today, the incident happened around 6:00 a.m. near Angel Gabriel Bus Stop. The tricycle, which was fully loaded with four women heading from Mowo to Ikoga Market, was struck by a speeding vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
One of the survivors, who sustained serious injuries, recounted that the driver of the car, in an attempt to maneuver through a better portion of the pothole-ridden road, suddenly rammed into the tricycle. She added that the driver, upon realizing the extent of the damage, immediately fled the scene, abandoning the victims.
“It took the extra effort of passersby to rescue one of us whose leg was trapped in the wreckage. Unfortunately, she later died in the hospital at Ilado, Olorunda LCDA,” the survivor said.
The incident has once again brought to the fore the deplorable state of the Mowo-Ikoga road, a critical artery serving more than 40 communities. For over a decade, residents and commuters have lamented its neglect, which worsens during heavy rainfall.
Though palliative measures have been intermittently carried out by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, the Member representing Badagry Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, and the Lagos State Public Works Department, the road remains in a near-impossible state. Many stakeholders insist that only a full-scale reconstruction can end the suffering of road users and prevent further loss of lives.
The Sunday accident has now sparked fresh calls from residents and community leaders, urging both Lagos State and the Federal Government to urgently intervene before more tragedies occur on what many describe as “a death trap in waiting.”
