JUST IN: LASU Unions Suspend Strike, to Resume Wednesday, fixes New Date for Exams

Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, will reopen on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, following the suspension of the strike by its academic and non-academic staff unions.

The industrial action, which began on July 31, had paralysed academic and administrative activities across the institution. The decision to call off the strike was reached on Monday during a congress of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising ASUU, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT.

Sources at the meeting confirmed to The Punch that work will resume on Wednesday, with JAC expected to release a formal communiqué outlining the terms of the suspension.

Before this resolution, LASU workers had rejected the Lagos State Government’s offer on outstanding entitlements. Last Thursday, JAC and the university management met with Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, where an agreement was signed for the payment of 12 months out of 23 months’ arrears from salary increments. The government will cover nine months, while LASU management will pay the remaining three months, spread between August and December 2025.

However, at an emergency congress last Friday, some staff rejected the deal, demanding full payment in five instalments starting August 2025, and accused JAC leaders of signing the agreement without broad approval.

Following this, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello appealed to workers to accept the offer, stressing the potential harm a prolonged strike could cause to students, the university community, and LASU’s reputation.

The Senate of LASU has approved the resumption of academic and social activities from Wednesday. Students are to return to their hostels on all campuses in Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe the same day. The 2024/2025 second-semester examinations, previously suspended, will now commence on Monday, August 18, 2025.

The university’s Centre for Information and Public Relations urged students to return promptly and prepare adequately for the examinations.
