Sanwo-Olu Approves Only One Appointment for New Lagos LG Chairmen, Puts Others on Hold – Hints at EFCC Training

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed all newly sworn-in Chairmen of Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across Lagos State to hold off on appointing their cabinet members for now — except for one: Chief of Staff.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Lagos House in Ikeja on Sunday, the Governor said the Chairmen must first carry out a proper needs assessment in their councils before making further appointments. He gave a 60-day window to complete this process.

“You don’t need to rush,” Sanwo-Olu advised. “You’re not under any pressure to fill positions immediately. First understand what your people truly need, then act accordingly.”

While the Governor gave them the go-ahead to appoint only their Chief of Staff for now, he emphasized that leadership at the grassroots must focus on service and not personal gain.

He also hinted that training sessions will soon be organized for the newly elected council leaders, with resource persons from key institutions such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The aim, he said, is to prepare them for the demands of public office and help them stay accountable.

“There’s no room for pettiness anymore,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “Elections are over. Now it’s time to work. Respect your party leaders and remember the party is supreme. Your success is our success, and Lagos is counting on you to deliver real development.”

He reminded the new council bosses that the power now rests on their shoulders, urging them to take governance to every street and corner of their communities.

Earlier in the ceremony, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Hon. Bolaji Robert, described the election victories as a clear show of public confidence in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the candidates themselves.

Speaking on behalf of all Chairmen, Hon. Sesan Olowa of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government said the newly elected officials are committed to delivering good governance at the grassroots level.

“We’re ready to fulfill our campaign promises and ensure every community feels the impact of good leadership,” Olowa said.

As the new Chairmen settle into office, all eyes are now on how they will manage the next 60 days and begin shaping their cabinets with the people’s needs in mind.
