EKEDC - AN ENERGY COMPANY WITH LACK OF REGARDS FOR CONSUMERS By Posu Joseph

In his new-year broadcast to Nigerians in 2024, President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to critical sectors of the economy and he minced no words hammering on electricity. He recognized the fact that a nation aspiring for economic prosperity must prioritize electricity as a critical sector.

The power sector has three phases: Generation, Transmission and Distribution. The closest to the masses are  the distribution companies.

In Lagos State, at the heart of this distribution is Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC). Of the districts of this company in the state, Agbara District is the worst of them for lack of regard for consumers. The Agbara District covers from Agbara to Badagry - a very strategic and gateway  community to Nigeria from sister states of the West Africa sub-region.

Badagry has very rich  economic potentials in the Port industry, Tourism, rich soil for agricultural prosperity, Fishing,Coconut economy and so on.

Seme border, the border community between Nigeria and Benin-Republic is a huge revenue base for Nigeria. January to October 2023, the command generated #3.05 billion, surpassing its 2023 target by over #1 billion.

In April 2025 alone, the Nigerian Customs Service generated #847 million naira.

The community has even more economic potential. In logistics industry, it is estimated that by the time the Badagry port is fully operational, it is capable of generating 250,000 jobs and can generate annual income of $54 billion. That's how huge Badagry is !

Yet, those in charge of the most critical sector of its economy, Power-distribution sector, toys with the people.

An Engineer of the EKEDC Agbara District confessed to this writer this week that the company treats the complaints of the consumers as mere noise and when they are tired of making the noise, they will keep quiet. Wow.... In the almost a step to the 2nd quarter of the 21st Century, no company treats customers this way except the company is a useless one.

Since January of this year 2025, electricity supply has been so epileptic in Badagry, thereby, not only crippling the economy and making it atrophic, but has also killed the dream of Mr President of ensuring economic prosperity through constant supply of electricity in that area.

It is therefore terrible, horrible, wicked, abysmal, unacceptable and a demonstration of gross incompetence on the part of the company.

Such a company should be ashamed of itself and should do everything to redeem its image.

Imagine a sensitive organization of that nature not having trust and regards of its consumers. I doubt it if it has a going concern.

I am Posu, Joseph Sewanu.
