A serious accident involving two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses left one driver trapped and dozens of passengers shaken after a head-on collision at the Cement Bus Stop along Old Abeokuta Road in Lagos on Friday, June 20.
According to a live traffic update from Raphael Jerahmeel of Lagos Traffic Radio, the crash occurred during the morning rush hour, causing panic and heavy traffic gridlock in the area. Both buses were reportedly carrying a combined total of about 100 passengers at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers screaming and scrambling for safety moments after the collision. One of the BRT drivers was said to have been trapped in the wreckage, prompting an emergency rescue effort by first responders.
“Rescue efforts were ongoing as at the time of this report,” Jerahmeel said during his broadcast. “We’re urging motorists to avoid the route for now as traffic officials and emergency services work at the scene.”
There were no immediate reports of fatalities, but several passengers reportedly sustained minor injuries and were treated on-site by emergency medical teams.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the crash, but investigations are expected to follow. Meanwhile, commuters are advised to seek alternative routes as recovery operations continue.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency agencies remain on ground to manage the situation and clear the debris.
