Moving Truck Losts Control, Kills WAEC Candidate

A tragic accident occurred on Friday, May 23, 2025, along the newly rehabilitated Ikangba/Agoro road in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, when a truck lost control and ran into a group of students from Seico Secondary School, killing a female student on the spot.

The victim, who was reportedly sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), was returning home with her classmates after writing their paper when the incident happened. Witnesses said the students were still holding their exam papers when the truck, coming from the Molipa axis, suddenly veered off its lane and plowed into them before crashing into the fence of a nearby Redeemed Christian Church.

Mr. Eko Nicholas, Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR), who spoke to Punch, confirmed that another female student was critically injured and is currently receiving medical attention.

“It was a horrifying scene. The students were clearly just coming from their exam center. Sadly, one of them, a girl, died instantly. We’re all hoping the second girl pulls through,” he said.

Nicholas lamented the rise in accidents on the road since its rehabilitation, blaming the government's failure to install necessary safety features like speed bumps and road signage.

“This is yet another avoidable death. Since February, six lives have been lost on this road, with many others injured. The absence of speed breakers encourages reckless driving, and school children walk this road every day,” he added.

He called on the Ogun State Government to urgently install speed barriers and street lighting to prevent further tragedies, noting that several schools are located along the stretch.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, also confirmed the incident, stating that TRACE officers at the scene reported the death of one student.

The community is now mourning yet another young life cut short and hoping swift action will be taken to ensure such an incident never happens again.
