Edo PDP Defies Rain, Holds Peaceful Ward Congresses Across 192 Wards

Despite heavy rainfall, members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State turned out in large numbers on Saturday to participate in the party’s ward congresses, where new executives and delegates were elected across the 192 wards of the state.

At Oredo Wards I, II, and III in Benin City, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria, the exercise was peaceful, with enthusiastic party members casting their votes.

The state caretaker chairman of the PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, who monitored the process alongside members of the ward congress electoral committee from Abuja, said the turnout reflected the resilience and growing strength of the party.

“The ward congresses were very peaceful. Members of the PDP were very vibrant, very active, and they elected the 17-member executive in the various wards we attended. From what we saw, we are excited and happy. We cannot thank PDP members in the state enough for the enthusiasm,” he said.

Aziegbemi admitted he was initially uncertain about what to expect but was impressed by members who braved the rain. “I was a little bit jittery when I went with the panel, but I was pleasantly surprised. By as early as 7:30 a.m., people were already at the grounds to cast their votes. We think PDP is rising, and we believe we will give the APC a run for their money,” he added.

He further expressed confidence that what he described as the “abysmal failure of the government at both the federal and state levels” would pave the way for the PDP to reclaim Edo in 2027.

Similarly, the Chairman of the PDP Ward Congress Electoral Committee, Mr. Tariga Tulagha, praised the peaceful conduct and unity displayed by party members, noting there was no sign of division within the ranks.

“So far, the exercise was peaceful, there was no trouble, and there was full compliance with the provisions of the law. Despite the rain, people came out in their numbers, and we are impressed,” Tulagha said.

He added that motions raised during the elections received unanimous approval, dismissing speculations of internal crisis. “When motions were raised, the ‘ayes’ were 100 percent, and the ‘nays’ were zero. The issue of factions does not apply here,” he stressed.
