The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt after suspected cultists attacked mourners during a burial ceremony in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, leaving at least four people dead and about 15 others injured.
The tragic incident happened late Thursday during the burial rites of an 18-year-old boy in Ezi Village. According to witnesses, the attackers stormed the compound on motorcycles and opened fire on mourners, throwing the community into chaos as people fled for safety.
“They came suddenly and started shooting at everyone,” an eyewitness said, adding that the gunmen sped off immediately after the assault.
Another source suggested the violence was linked to a cult rivalry, describing it as a possible revenge mission. “Friends of the deceased had gathered for a wake, and while some were entertaining themselves, the gunmen struck. Many were shot, and several bodies were later taken to the morgue,” the source added. While locals claimed more than eight people were killed, police confirmed four deaths.
Police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, confirmed that investigations had commenced to track down those responsible. He said preliminary findings point to a clash between rival cult groups.
Ikenga assured the public of the command’s commitment to restoring peace and urged residents to provide useful information that could help the investigation.
