Whejiepon Appointed to Lead Publicity, Media Coordination for Slave Freedom Memorial in Badagry

Preparations for this year’s International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition have gained fresh momentum as the organizing committee has appointed Mr. Whejiepon Anthony Ola, the Chief Executive Officer of Badagry Online Radio, to spearhead publicity and media coordination for the annual commemoration tagged Slave Freedom Memorial.

The remembrance, which holds in Badagry — a historic town globally recognized for its role in the transatlantic slave trade — will feature a series of events including a candlelight procession, cultural displays, community activities, lectures, drama performances, and film screenings. These activities are designed to honor the memory of enslaved Africans and to promote greater awareness of Badagry’s heritage as a critical site of human resilience and emancipation.

In his new role, Anthony Ola is expected to leverage his extensive experience in media and his vast grassroots network to ensure widespread coverage of the memorial. His responsibilities will include coordinating pre-event awareness campaigns and ensuring post-event reportage across both local and mainstream media platforms.

Speaking on the appointment, members of the committee expressed confidence in his ability to bring greater visibility to the event and to engage the Badagry community, particularly the younger generation, in conversations about history, identity, and freedom.

Badagry, as one of the most prominent slave trade routes in West Africa, continues to serve as a focal point for such global commemorations, reminding the world of the resilience of the African spirit and the ongoing quest for justice and dignity.
