Tragedy on Badagry Expressway: One-Way SUV Driver Kills Tricycle Rider, Flees Scene

A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway near Oko-Afo, where a commercial tricycle rider lost his life after a fatal head-on collision with a vehicle reportedly driving against traffic.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash occurred when a black Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV, with the customised plate number OSUNFNKE, was driving against the flow of traffic from Ile-Epo and slammed into the oncoming tricycle, registered as MUS 716 QM.

In a statement released on Sunday, LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed that the tricycle operator sustained severe injuries, including a dislocated knee, and died on the spot.

The SUV driver, rather than render help, reportedly fled the scene immediately, abandoning both the vehicle and the victim. LASTMA officials, in collaboration with personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), swiftly moved in to clear the wreckage and ease the resulting traffic congestion. The deceased’s body was taken to the mortuary at the General Hospital in Badagry.

The vehicles involved in the crash have since been transferred to the Morogbo Police Division for further investigation.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, strongly condemned the reckless act, describing it as not only a gross violation of traffic regulations but a blatant disregard for human life and public safety.

The incident has once again stirred public concern over the increasing cases of one-way driving across Lagos, especially along the ever-busy Badagry Expressway.
