President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed the emergence of Obafemi Hamzat as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, further strengthening the Deputy Governor’s position ahead of the next governorship election in the state.
The endorsement by the President came on Wednesday in Abuja, following the earlier decision of the Lagos APC Governance Advisory Council, GAC, which had unanimously adopted Hamzat as its preferred candidate.
The influential GAC, regarded as the highest decision-making organ of the APC in Lagos State, reportedly reached the decision after a crucial meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where party leaders deliberated on the future leadership of the state.
Tinubu’s backing is widely seen as a major political boost for Hamzat, whose growing acceptance within the party hierarchy has continued to gather momentum in recent days.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had also openly thrown his weight behind his deputy, describing Hamzat as the most suitable candidate to continue the developmental agenda of the ruling party in the state.
Sanwo-Olu was said to have praised Hamzat’s loyalty, competence, and contribution to governance in Lagos over the years, insisting that he possesses the experience and capacity needed to lead the state.
The latest endorsement by both the President and the party leadership is expected to reshape the political atmosphere within the Lagos APC, as stakeholders and aspirants continue consultations ahead of the party’s governorship race.
Political observers believe the coordinated endorsements signal a strong move by the party establishment to present a united front and avoid internal divisions ahead of the election season.
