The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, on Wednesday extended financial support to another 200 residents under the fourth edition of the Renewed Hope Asiwaju Cash Support Programme, with each beneficiary receiving ₦100,000.
The latest phase of the intervention saw a total of ₦20 million disbursed to beneficiaries drawn from different parts of the local government, including petty traders, artisans, widows, widowers, elderly residents and other vulnerable groups.
The initiative, which was launched during the Chairman’s 100 Days in Office celebration, is a monthly empowerment programme designed to cushion the effect of economic hardship and strengthen small scale businesses at the grassroots.
According to Hon. Hunpe, the programme is expected to run for about 20 months and target no fewer than 4,000 residents across Badagry Local Government.
Speaking at the event, the council boss described the intervention as a local demonstration of the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said the increased allocations to local governments from the Federal Government must directly impact the lives of ordinary people.
Hon. Hunpe noted that in a period of economic challenges, government must remain responsive and proactive by providing practical relief to residents.
He said the cash support programme was created not only to offer temporary assistance to struggling households, but also to help beneficiaries expand their businesses and create more stable sources of income.
"Governance must be felt by the people," he said. "At a time like this, we cannot fold our arms while residents are struggling. This support is meant to bring relief and also help our people grow their businesses."
The Chairman acknowledged that empowerment programmes often attract criticism, but insisted that such interventions remain necessary in addressing the immediate needs of residents.
He stressed that the programme is non-partisan and open to all eligible residents, regardless of political affiliation, urging those yet to benefit to remain patient as more phases of the scheme are underway.
Hon. Hunpe further advised beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds by investing in their various businesses rather than spending the money on non-essential items.
He disclosed that the council has put monitoring and accountability measures in place to ensure the programme achieves its intended purpose.
In what many residents described as another major relief effort, the Chairman also announced plans to organize a Renewed Hope Discount Market ahead of the Ileya festival. He added that additional palliatives would be distributed before the end of the month to further support families facing economic hardship.
Earlier in her opening remarks, the Council Manager, Mrs. Abosede Oluwakemi Senami, praised the consistency of the initiative and its growing impact on local economic activities.
She encouraged beneficiaries to make the best use of the opportunity, noting that the support could become a turning point for many small business owners.
Also speaking, the Leader of the Legislative Arm of the Council, Hon. Asokere Mautin Bankole, commended the Chairman for sustaining the programme.
He said the real success of the intervention would be measured by how well beneficiaries use the funds to improve their businesses and living conditions.
The event was attended by the Wife of the Council Chairman, Chief Mrs. Elizabeth Oluwatoyin Hunpe; the Vice Chairman, Hon. Akeem Adeyemi; councillors led by the Leader of the House, Hon. Bankole Mautin Asokere; members of the Executive Arm led by the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Benjamin Adagba; the Council Management Team led by Mrs. Abosede Oluwakemi Senami; the Apex Leader of the APC in Badagry Local Government, Chief Moses Zannu Ogunbiyi; and a large number of beneficiaries.
The atmosphere at the event was filled with excitement and gratitude as beneficiaries praised the initiative and expressed hope that the support would help them revive and grow their businesses.
