A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Badagry Constituency I, Hon. Bonu Solomon Saanu, has written an emotional appeal to Nigeria's First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, requesting urgent intervention for the establishment of a General Hospital in Badagry West Local Council Development Area.

The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria operates under the ambit of the Presidency of Nigeria.

In the letter addressed to the Office of the First Lady at Aso Villa, Abuja, the lawmaker described the border community as a historic and economically vital area whose residents continue to suffer due to the absence of a standard healthcare facility.

According to him, the people of Badagry West, many of whom are traders, farmers, fishermen and entrepreneurs engaged in cross-border commerce, are left helpless whenever medical emergencies arise.

He lamented that residents must travel long distances to the nearest health facility at Badagry General Hospital, a journey he said is often delayed by multiple police and customs checkpoints.

Bonu stated that the delays have cost several lives, especially among pregnant women, accident victims and critically ill patients.

“Minutes turn into agonising hours. Mothers in labour, accident victims and the critically ill have slipped away in those moments, their lives claimed not by their sickness, but by the distance and delays,” the lawmaker wrote.

Describing the appeal as “a cry from the borderlands,” Bonu urged the First Lady to use her office and influence to champion the establishment of a General Hospital in Badagry West LCDA.

He noted that such a facility would not only save lives, but would also restore dignity, security and hope to thousands of residents living in the area.

The lawmaker praised the First Lady as “a voice of compassion and a beacon of hope for the vulnerable,” adding that if the hospital eventually becomes a reality, generations of Badagry West residents would remember her for responding to their cry.

Bonu later disclosed the letter in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning, saying he had formally presented the request through the Office of the First Lady during his party’s convention.

In the post, the lawmaker wrote that he has been working tirelessly to improve the lives of his constituents and called on residents to support the campaign for the health facility.

“I urge you all to join me in this collective effort to develop our constituency,” he stated.

The appeal is coming amid growing concerns over the poor state of healthcare infrastructure in many border communities across Lagos State, despite their strategic importance to the economy and national security.

Also referenced in the post was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, under whose administration residents hope the proposed intervention can receive swift attention.
