Tosin Whingan Calls for Community Ownership in Clean Up Badagry Initiative's Waste Recycling Drive

Environmental advocacy took centre stage in Ikoga Zebbe Kingdom, Badagry, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, as the Clean Up Badagry Initiative, under the leadership of its Chairperson, Mrs Tosin Whingan, wife of Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, organised a capacity-building training on waste management and recycling in partnership with Prudential Zenith Life Insurance.

The programme, which attracted over 250 participants, was designed as a strategic follow up to the recent excavation of an illegal dumpsite in the Ikoga community and earlier sensitization exercises for traders and commuters. The initiative aimed at tackling persistent environmental and public health challenges while empowering residents with practical skills to sustain a cleaner and healthier environment.

Speaking at the training, Mrs Tosin Whingan emphasized that lasting environmental progress depends largely on community ownership and behavioural change. She noted that while infrastructure and clean up interventions are important, they remain ineffective without continuous education, local participation and a shared sense of responsibility among residents.

According to her, the Clean Up Badagry Initiative is committed to building community driven solutions that place environmental protection in the hands of the people, stressing that every household and stakeholder has a role to play in preventing the return of illegal dumpsites.

Participants at the training were taken through practical sessions on waste segregation, recycling and creative reuse, including fashion waste recycling, composting, agro waste management and recyclable upcycling. The interactive nature of the programme allowed attendees to explore sustainable waste disposal methods and community led monitoring strategies.

Those in attendance included members of the Royal Cabinet of Ikoga Zebbe Kingdom, market leaders, school student leaders, youth representatives, Community Development Association members, as well as environmental and health officers.

Also speaking at the event, the Head of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility at Prudential Zenith Life Insurance, Mr Sam Adehaka, reaffirmed the company’s support for grassroots environmental initiatives and healthier living environments.

The training ended with the presentation of certificates to participants. Organizers disclosed that the Ikoga Zebbe exercise forms part of a wider environmental regeneration plan that includes continuous sensitization, monitoring and the proposed development of a green space within the community.

The Clean Up Badagry Initiative expressed appreciation to community leaders, volunteers and partners for their support, reiterating its resolve to deepen people focused environmental action across Badagry and beyond.
