The Lagos State House of Assembly has dismissed reports claiming that it made budgetary provisions to purchase houses in Abuja for its members, describing the allegation as false, misleading and driven by political mischief.
The Assembly made this known in a joint statement signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh.
According to the lawmakers, there is absolutely no provision in the 2026 Appropriation Law for the purchase of houses in Abuja or anywhere else for members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. They described the report as a complete fabrication being circulated by individuals bent on misleading the public.
The statement noted that the Assembly does not operate in Abuja, stressing that all its constitutional duties, legislative responsibilities and constituencies are strictly within Lagos State. It described the claim that lawmakers would budget public funds for personal housing outside their jurisdiction as illogical and irresponsible.
The Assembly further stated that the 2026 budget is already in the public domain and open to scrutiny by Lagosians and Nigerians, adding that the state’s budgeting process remains transparent and focused on meeting the needs of a complex and fast growing megacity.
It described the rumour as part of a broader election season propaganda aimed at eroding public trust, sowing discord and casting democratic institutions in bad light.
Clarifying further, the chairmen revealed that the capital expenditure of the House of Assembly in the 2026 budget is less than 0.04 per cent of the state’s total capital expenditure, a figure they said clearly reflects the legislature’s commitment to prudence, accountability and fiscal responsibility. They added that in many years, the Assembly does not even exhaust its approved budget.
The statement reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to transparency, good governance and the collective welfare of Lagos residents, in line with the objectives of the 2026 Budget of Shared Prosperity.
The lawmakers challenged those behind the allegation to present credible evidence or immediately retract their claims, warning that failure to do so could attract legal action.
They urged Lagosians and the general public to ignore the rumour and always verify information through official and credible sources.
