Akran’s Demise: Total Shutdown, Curfew Observed At Agbalata Market

Commercial life at the popular Badagry International Market Agbalata came to a complete halt on Tuesday as traders and residents observed a solemn shutdown in honour of the late paramount ruler of Badagry Kingdom His Royal Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I the Akran of Badagry who joined his ancestors on Monday 12 January 2026

The usually vibrant market was unusually quiet with shops under lock and key and traders staying away from their stalls in a collective show of mourning respect and loyalty to the revered royal stool

Speaking with CityMood the Secretary to the Badagry Market Mr Lookman Emilagba explained that the decision to shut down the market was rooted in tradition and deep respect for the monarch and the institution he represented

He described the late Akran as more than a traditional ruler noting that he was a unifying figure whose reign left lasting impact on the people of Badagry

According to Emilagba the market shutdown was the community’s way of paying final respect to a king who served with dignity wisdom and unwavering commitment to his people and the ancient kingdom of Badagry
