St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School, Ikoga-Zebbe, one of Badagry’s most historic educational institutions, has begun a weeklong celebration to mark its 80th anniversary, honoring eight decades of academic excellence, moral upbringing, and community service.
The milestone anniversary, which runs from September 22 to 26, 2025, features a rich line-up of events blending thanksgiving, reunion, service, and festivity.
The celebration kicked off on Monday, September 22, with a solemn Thanksgiving Mass at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Ikoga-Zebbe. The Mass, attended by parishioners, alumni, staff, pupils, and community leaders, was a moment of gratitude for the school’s enduring impact on education and society since its founding in 1945.
Day two, Tuesday, September 23, was dedicated to service. Old and current pupils teamed up for a Community Service Exercise that saw them cleaning significant landmarks, including churches, the central mosque, the traditional palace, and the market square. Later in the day, the school hosted a Medical Outreach, which attracted residents in large numbers. Participants received free health check-ups, treatments, and counseling for a variety of ailments, further reinforcing the school’s tradition of service to humanity.
The celebrations will continue on Wednesday, September 24, with a Special Assembly of Old Pupils and Teachers. The gathering promises to be a historic reunion as it brings together alumni from across generations—from the pre-independence classes of the 1940s and 1950s to the post-independence cohorts of the 1960s through 1990s, and the millennium sets from 2000 to date. The assembly will not only rekindle fond memories but also pay tribute to the teachers who laid the foundations of discipline, knowledge, and character in countless students.
The climax of the week is set for Friday, September 26, with a colorful Grand Finale scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Highlights of the day will include an 80th Anniversary Sports Competition, cultural dance performances by both past and present pupils, and a fundraising drive to support ongoing anniversary projects designed to preserve the legacy of the school for generations to come.
Speaking on behalf of the Anniversary Committee, Chairman Tony Dansu praised the contributions of alumni spread across Nigeria and abroad, noting that their active participation and generosity have been instrumental in making the 80th anniversary celebration a reality.
“As we mark this milestone, St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School reaffirms its mission of providing holistic education rooted in discipline, faith, and service to humanity,” Dansu said.
With its proud history and enduring impact, St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School, Ikoga-Zebbe stands tall as not just an educational institution but also a pillar of community development and moral leadership in Badagry and beyond.
