Former Super Eagles captain and football legend, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, has debunked rumours suggesting he is eyeing the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The speculation followed Tuesday’s disappointing 1-1 draw between Nigeria and South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which triggered fresh calls for the resignation of the Ibrahim Gusau-led NFF board. Soon after, claims began circulating that Okocha was interested in taking over the leadership of Nigerian football.
But the 1994 AFCON winner has now come out strongly to dismiss the reports, describing them as false and misleading.
“Hello everyone, I just want to use this opportunity to say that the news and post circulating is false,” Okocha clarified. “I have not said or spoken to anyone about Nigerian football or any interest in becoming NFF president. I’m currently in Kigali attending SPORTSBIZAFRICA.
“So, I plead with those spreading such false information to stop. I understand the frustration my people are going through, but be rest assured that better days are ahead. Let’s keep believing. I know it’s not easy, but we’re all in it together. God bless, and let’s stay strong.”
The Super Eagles now face an uphill task in their World Cup qualifying campaign. With 11 points, Nigeria trail Group C leaders South Africa by six points, with only two matches left to play. Their next fixtures are in October, when they take on Lesotho and Benin Republic in matchdays 9 and 10.
