Lagos Commissioner Ogunlende Turns Self to Emergency Traffic Officer, Clears Gridlock Threat on Busy Road

In an unusual but commendable display of leadership, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, took matters into his own hands earlier today by stepping into the role of a traffic officer to prevent what could have been a major traffic jam on a busy Lagos road.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning as the commissioner was heading for his routine gym workout. A large tree had fallen across the road, posing a serious obstruction to motorists and threatening to paralyze traffic in the area.

Rather than drive past or wait for help, Mr. Ogunlende immediately sprang into action. In a now-viral video he shared on Facebook, the commissioner was seen directing vehicles and guiding road users towards alternative routes, effectively preventing a looming gridlock.

Explaining the situation in his post, Ogunlende wrote:

"For a Greater Lagos, we all need to take charge and action of every activity in our environment. This morning, on my way to the gym for my early workout, I encountered a fallen tree blocking the road, which could have caused a gridlock. I quickly took action to manage the traffic and contacted the LASTMA team and my colleague, the Commissioner for Transport, who promptly joined me. Together, we were able to clear the road and restore traffic flow."

The commissioner’s swift intervention, along with the prompt support of officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Commissioner for Transportation, ensured that the road was cleared in record time.

The incident has since drawn wide praise from Lagosians online, with many hailing Ogunlende’s hands-on leadership and calling it a shining example of public service in action.

Analysts say this rare gesture sends a strong message on civic responsibility and leadership by example. It also highlights the importance of government officials being actively involved in the day-to-day realities faced by the people they serve.

This isn’t the first time Lagos has witnessed high-ranking officials personally stepping into frontline roles, but Mr. Ogunlende’s timely response stands out for its immediacy and impact.

As traffic remains one of the biggest challenges in Lagos, this act of personal responsibility by a sitting commissioner could serve as a model for other public officials—and citizens alike.

“Leadership is not just about holding a title; it's about taking action when it matters most,” one Facebook commenter wrote.

For many residents, today’s action might not have made headlines if the commissioner had simply made a phone call and moved on. But by physically stepping into the chaos and helping restore order, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende may have just given Lagosians a much-needed reminder: building a Greater Lagos starts with each of us.
