JUST IN: Another Newly Sworn-In Lagos Council Official Dies

The political landscape of Lagos State has once again been thrown into mourning following the death of Hon. Zainab Kosoko, Councillor representing Ward C3 in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and Chief Whip of the Legislative Chamber.

Kosoko, who was sworn into office less than a month ago, reportedly passed away on Monday night after battling complications arising from malaria.

According to reports, the councillor took ill last week and was initially admitted to Mushin General Hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where she died despite medical efforts to save her.

Her passing comes barely a week after Badagry Today reported the death of Hon. Oluwakemi Rufai, the only female councillor in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, who represented Ward C1. Rufai died on August 13, less than two weeks after being sworn into office, following a brief illness.

The sudden loss of two newly inaugurated female councillors within such a short span has left the Lagos grassroots political community in deep shock.

Confirming Kosoko’s death, the Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Sesan Olowa, and the Chairman of Lekki LCDA, Hon. Rasaki Kasali, expressed grief and described her demise as a huge blow to the council system in Lagos.

In his condolence message, Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Mushin Constituency I, Hon. Prince Nureni Ayinde Akinsanya, described the incident as a devastating loss for the community.

“With deep shock and sadness, I received the news of the passing of our dear sister, Hon. Zainab Kosoko. Her death, coming less than a month after being sworn into office, is not only painful but also a huge loss to the people she set out to serve with passion and dedication,” Akinsanya said.

He further eulogized her as a selfless and committed leader, dedicated to the growth and progress of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, while praying for comfort and strength for her family and loved ones.

As tributes continue to pour in from political leaders and constituents, many have described Kosoko’s untimely death as not just a personal tragedy but also a collective loss for the community she represented.

The atmosphere in Mushin and across Lagos’ grassroots political circle remains somber as residents reflect on the fleeting nature of life and service.
