A chilling road encounter on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway has prompted social and human rights activist, Modiu Olaguro, to raise public alarm and call for help in identifying a reckless driver who nearly took his life and that of his family.
Olaguro, known for his advocacy and community work in Badagry, shared the disturbing experience on his Facebook page on Wednesday, narrating how a motorist driving against traffic—popularly called "one-way" in Lagos—almost caused a fatal crash near the Itorikoh Junction of the newly reconstructed expressway.
“Residents of Badagry, kindly help identify this man,” he began in his post shared with a video clip of the incident on Facebook, which has since gone viral among concerned locals.
According to Olaguro, he was driving with his wife and son when a vehicle suddenly appeared in front of them from the wrong side of the road. “I had to apply the brakes in a hurry, asking my wife and son if they were okay,” he said, recounting the close brush with death.
He approached the driver, urging him to reverse and take the proper lane. But instead of showing remorse, the man reportedly became hostile.
“Rather than do that, he called me an animal, cursed me and my parents,” Olaguro said. As he attempted to confront the driver further, things escalated dangerously. “In a flash, he just zoomed at a slight angle in my direction. If I had not jumped on his car, he would have crushed me,” he explained. The activist claimed he had to remain on the car's bonnet as the driver sped off.
Olaguro reported the matter to the Badagry Police Station, but says efforts to get immediate action hit a wall. “The officer in charge said there was nothing she could do since the car does not have a license plate. She advised me to call her whenever I see the guy.”
Frustrated by the seeming lack of immediate legal recourse, Olaguro took to social media, sharing a video of the incident and appealing to the public for help in identifying the driver. “If you know this guy, kindly inbox me so I may (1) help the police locate him for driving against traffic, and (2) personally sue him to court for attempted murder,” he wrote.
The activist also used the opportunity to highlight the alarming trend of reckless driving and one-way traffic violations in Badagry, even after the completion of long-awaited road repairs.
“Since the Badagry axis of the expressway was fixed, there is hardly a week that a serious crash does not occur due to driving against traffic,” he lamented.
He recalled a recent tragedy where two junior students of State High School, Ibereko, lost their lives in a similar incident. “Their okada rider was driving against traffic near Limca Bus Stop. One of them was a son of a family friend. The second victim, who survived the impact, was said to be in such a bad state that neighbors were praying for his death rather than a life of permanent disability,” he said.
The activist’s post has since sparked conversations online, with many residents sharing similar encounters and calling on law enforcement to act decisively against traffic law violators.
As at press time, no identification has been made regarding the driver in question. Residents with any information have been urged to reach out directly to Modiu Olaguro or report to the nearest police station.
The incident underscores growing public concern over road safety and the apparent impunity with which some motorists continue to endanger lives despite government investment in infrastructure.
