2027: INEC Fixes Date for Start of Nationwide Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will begin nationwide on Monday, August 18, 2025, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Benue State, Prof. Sam Egwu, made this known in Makurdi on Monday. He explained that the exercise is in line with constitutional provisions aimed at capturing Nigerians who have newly attained the age of 18 or missed out on previous registration opportunities.

According to Prof. Egwu, the exercise will begin with an online pre-registration via the INEC website. This will be followed by in-person registration, starting Monday, August 25, 2025, at all INEC area offices and designated centers across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The registration will hold weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

He said the CVR exercise will cater to:

  • First-time registrants who have turned 18 after the 2023 elections.

  • Nigerians who were unable to register earlier due to being outside the country, in prison, or simply uninterested.

  • Individuals who need to replace lost or damaged voter cards.

  • Those who wish to correct personal information or transfer their registration to a new location, ward, or polling unit.

Prof. Egwu strongly warned that the registration process is free of charge and that no one should pay or offer bribes to be registered. He urged eligible Nigerians to register early and avoid the usual last-minute rush that often results in stress and long queues.

He also assured that internally displaced persons (IDPs) will not be left out, as special arrangements are being made to accommodate them during the exercise.

Finally, the REC said the commission will announce a closing date for the exercise in due time, to allow for data processing and other necessary preparations ahead of the elections.
