A prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr. Sani Dawop, has alleged that no fewer than seven governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are secretly funding a powerful opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Trust TV News on Monday, Dr. Dawop disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi are leading talks to form a united political front against President Tinubu.
According to Dawop, the group is currently in discussions with the ADC, exploring the possibility of using the party’s platform to challenge the APC in the next presidential race.
“There are about six to seven APC governors who are funding the coalition. Go and check. Do your investigation,” he stated.
He likened the current political realignments to the events of 2013, when a breakaway faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), known as the nPDP, teamed up with other parties to form the APC — a coalition that ultimately swept the PDP out of power in the 2015 general election.
“That is exactly what happened when the nPDP joined the APC in 2015. In Nigerian politics, group interests and realignments are normal,” Dawop explained. “In the PDP, you have the Atiku group, the Wike group, and others. The APC also has factions — the CPC bloc, the Tinubu-led ACN bloc. These blocs never really disappeared. They still exist and influence internal party politics.”
He added that the presence of multiple power blocs within parties is often part of long-term political strategy.
“In politics, you don’t fire all your shots at once. You hold some back for strategic moments. That’s how it works,” he said.
Dawop further claimed that discontent is growing within the APC, with several members dissatisfied with the current state of affairs under President Tinubu’s leadership.
“There are lots of issues brewing inside the APC. Many are not happy with the way things are going,” he noted.
He also expressed concern over the lack of internal democracy in major political parties, urging party leaders to ensure a fair and open process in future elections.
“You must provide a level playing field. That’s what democracy is all about. Let people have the freedom to contest — even against a sitting president,” he said.
Recalling how President Tinubu had to battle other contenders to clinch the APC ticket, Dawop insisted that others within the party should be free to do the same in 2027.
“If anyone within the APC wants to run, that’s their right. Endorsements can happen, but no one should be suppressed or denied the opportunity to contest — unless, of course, no one shows interest. That’s a different matter entirely.”
