Lagos Joint Task Force Arrests 36 Over Illegal Trading, Waste Violations Along Lagos-Badagry Expressway

A major enforcement operation along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Saturday led to the arrest of 35 people for illegal trading and environmental offences.

The coordinated raid, which stretched from Iyana-Iba to Okokomaiko, was carried out by a joint task force made up of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and the military-backed security outfit, Operation MESA (OP MESA).

During the operation, the team dismantled makeshift market stalls and illegal structures that had been set up on the road median—a known hotspot for traffic bottlenecks and poor sanitation. The arrested individuals are expected to face legal action in accordance with Lagos State’s environmental regulations.

Confirming the incident, LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, shared details via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account:

“A combined task force of #LAGESCOfficial, #Lawma_gov and OP MESA conducted raids on illegal traders on the median of Lagos-Badagry Expressway from Iyana-Iba to Okokomaiko. The team arrested 35 offenders who will be duly prosecuted. Waste clearance operations continue.”

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, also weighed in, revealing that the clean-up extended to adjoining areas such as the Ojo-Alaba Road—another area plagued by street trading and poor waste management.

“A joint team of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps @LAGESCOfficial and the Lagos Waste Management Agency @Lawma_gov carried out a clearance operation along Ojo-Alaba Road, dislodging illegal traders selling on the median,” Wahab stated.

He further disclosed that three individuals were taken into custody for obstructing the task force during the operation and will be charged under the state’s environmental laws.

Authorities say enforcement activities will continue in a bid to restore order and cleanliness across key parts of the metropolis.
