JUST IN: At Last, Sanwo-Olu Breaks Silence on Rumoured Rift with President Tinubu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has finally addressed the swirling rumours of a political rift between him and President Bola Tinubu, firmly denying any tension and labelling the reports as baseless media speculation.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday after a high-level, closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu dismissed the claims, saying they were being pushed by outsiders “crying more than the bereaved.”

The governor was accompanied by key members of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

For months, media reports have hinted at growing friction between Sanwo-Olu and the President, with claims that the governor was sidelining loyalists of Tinubu in an attempt to carve out political independence. But on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu broke his silence, describing the President as both “a leader and a father.”

He explained that the visit was part of the GAC’s long-standing tradition of paying Sallah homage to party elders and leaders during festive seasons.

“It’s our usual tradition during festivities for the Council to visit and extend warm greetings. It’s also a time for Mr. President to meet with his brothers and party leaders—something we all look forward to,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor noted that the visit also served as an opportunity to offer prayers, pledge support, and reaffirm the group’s commitment to the APC and its leadership.

He praised President Tinubu’s developmental legacy in Lagos, highlighting key achievements like the Blue Line rail project and recent federal efforts to tackle inflation and bring down the cost of fuel and food.

Sanwo-Olu’s public show of loyalty comes amid what insiders describe as a broader push to realign APC structures in Lagos and prevent political fragmentation within the party.

Addressing planned protests ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day, the governor urged patience, insisting that the economy is beginning to recover under Tinubu’s leadership.

“What exactly is the basis for the protest? The economy is on a positive path. Let’s give this President more time,” he said.

Also present at the meeting were Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and several influential APC leaders, who left the President’s residence with the GAC delegation—sending a strong signal of unity within the party’s ranks.
