The screening results, released earlier today by the APC, confirmed that the four aspirants will be the party’s flag bearers in the July 12th, 2025 local government polls, effectively eliminating the need for party primaries scheduled for May 10th in those areas.
Among the cleared aspirants is Bamidele Yusuf Sulaimon, 57, from Surulere Local Government, who became the sole candidate after his opponent, Mr. Oshodi Olanrewaju Bashir, 55, was disqualified on the grounds of not possessing a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC), a basic requirement for participation in the race.
In Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area, Kareem Azeez A., aged 48, also stands as the lone aspirant. His challenger, Moses Aina Olabisi, failed to appear before the party’s screening committee, leading to his disqualification.
For Lekki Local Council Development Area, the incumbent, Kasali Bamidele, 47, emerged unopposed as he was the only aspirant to pick up the APC nomination form and meet all screening requirements.
Similarly, Motunrayo Gbadebo Alogba, who is seeking to lead Ijede Local Council Development Area for a second term , sailed through the screening without contest, as she too remains the sole aspirant in her council.
The APC’s screening process, which is part of the internal mechanism to ensure credible candidates are presented for election, appears to have streamlined the race in several councils, setting the stage for what may be a smoother campaign season for these four candidates.
While some political observers view the unopposed status of the aspirants as a sign of internal party unity or strategic consensus-building, others are raising questions about inclusiveness and grassroots participation in the selection process. Nevertheless, the APC maintains that all guidelines were duly followed and the outcomes reflect both procedural compliance and party discipline.
As the July 12th elections approach, attention will now turn to the remaining local government areas where competitive primaries are expected, as well as to the broader political landscape across Lagos State, where various parties will be looking to make significant electoral gains.
For the unopposed candidates, the road to July may now be less bumpy, but the task of convincing the electorate and delivering effective governance remains just as critical.
