Amodu Shehu, the son of a well-known pepper seller at Oyingbo Market, has joined the race for the chairmanship of Lagos Mainland Local Government, officially obtaining the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form valued at ₦5.5 million.

Shehu, currently serving as the APC Ward F Chairman, declared his ambition on Friday, vowing to bring inclusive and transformative leadership to the council. An Information Technology expert with over a decade of experience in the private and financial sectors, Shehu said his decision to contest was fueled by his grassroots upbringing and a deep understanding of his community’s challenges.

“With my success story as a son of a pepper seller in a community filled with broken dreams and unfulfilled aspirations, I boldly say, nobody knows where the shoe hurts more than I do,” Shehu said while addressing supporters. "Together with your support, we can better the fortunes of the unborn children."

He outlined his plans to prioritize education, healthcare, youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and economic growth if elected, noting that his professional background would help him deliver competent and visionary leadership.

"I come aboard this contest of ideas and values with a daring wealth of experience from the private sector and the financial industry," he said. "Following wide consultations, I humbly offer myself to serve Lagos Mainland with purpose and competence."

At the declaration event, market leader Mama Iyabo hailed Shehu as a grassroots candidate, describing him as someone who intimately understands the everyday struggles of the people.

“Shehu is one of us. He grew up here, knows our markets, and understands our daily issues. He will speak for us with sincerity,” she said.

Youth leader and Ward G Councillor, Biliaminu Saka, praised Shehu's emergence as a sign that young people are stepping into leadership roles, bringing energy and fresh ideas to governance.

“Shehu represents a generation ready to lead. His consistency in engaging young people is commendable," Saka noted.

Similarly, Ward D Councillor Ayodele Isiekwene emphasized the level of support Shehu has garnered, saying, “Amodu's wide support shows the people trust him and believe he will deliver as APC Chairman.”

Shehu called on party leaders, community development associations, and residents to support his vision for a better Lagos Mainland, promising to unveil detailed policy plans in the coming days.
