The Lagos State Government says it has disbursed a total of ₦130 billion in subsidy interventions, benefiting at least 18.5 million residents across the state under various social protection initiatives.

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, revealed this during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja. He said the interventions formed part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s efforts to cushion the impact of economic shocks on the vast majority of Lagosians.

Among the major programs highlighted were the Transport Subsidy Allowance, rolled out in response to the removal of federal fuel subsidy, and Ounje Eko, a food subsidy scheme designed to provide affordable, nutritious food to low-income households.

“These initiatives have directly impacted over 18.5 million residents—spanning working families, transport users, and vulnerable households—across all 20 local government areas,” George stated.

To enhance transparency and precision in targeting, the state government linked the Lagos State Social Register (LASSR) with the National Identity Number (NIN), working in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). This step, according to George, ensured that subsidies reached genuine beneficiaries efficiently.

In addition, 400 trained enumerators were deployed to gather grassroots data across all LGAs, reinforcing the state’s commitment to evidence-based planning and equitable distribution of resources.

While outlining these interventions, George also noted that Lagos recorded strong economic indicators: a projected revenue growth from ₦2.08 trillion in 2024 to ₦2.968 trillion in 2025, and a nearly 29% increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which rose to ₦55.7 trillion in 2024.

He emphasized that despite being a sub-national, Lagos continues to shoulder national responsibilities, balancing economic leadership with inclusive development goals.

As questions linger about the specific demographics and distribution channels of the ₦130 billion subsidy spend, the administration insists its targeting framework is robust, community-focused, and data-driven.
