Obasa Tinubu and Meranda

In a dramatic twist to the ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), President Bola Tinubu has insisted on the reinstatement of former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. This directive was reinforced on Monday when the Governor's Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) mandated lawmakers to tender a formal apology for failing to consult party leadership before initiating impeachment proceedings against Obasa, report by Nigerian Tribune detailed

The emergency meeting, held at the Lagos House, saw the attendance of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and key members of the GAC.

Our source, The Nigerian Tribune, reported that an insider revealed President Tinubu was displeased with the impeachment process and insisted it be overturned to maintain stability in the state’s political landscape.

Following this, the GAC directed the lawmakers to draft two separate apology letters. The first letter addressed the President, acknowledging their misstep in impeaching Obasa without prior consultation with party leadership. In it, they pledged to convert the impeachment to a resignation process. The second letter, signed by 17 out of 20 lawmakers from Lagos West, expressed support for Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as Speaker, effectively setting aside zoning considerations.

Despite this resolution, the lawmakers reaffirmed their confidence in Speaker Meranda, praising her leadership and urging her to continue steering the affairs of the Assembly. However, with Tinubu’s firm stance and the GAC’s directive, Obasa’s return as Speaker appears inevitable.
