Tricycle Rider Crushed to Death by Speeding Venza After Ramming Into Oncoming Vehicle

A commercial tricycle operator lost his life on Tuesday in a fatal accident atop Egbe Bridge, Ikotun, Lagos State, when a speeding Toyota Venza rammed into his vehicle.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo, confirmed the incident, revealing that the crash occurred when the Venza, with registration number GWA 659 RD, attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre on the bridge.

According to Adebayo, the vehicle, which was coming from the Ejigbo axis, veered into the lane of an oncoming tricycle with number plate EPE 245 QM, causing a violent head-on collision. The tricycle rider died instantly, while two passengers,  a man and a woman, sustained multiple fractures and other severe injuries.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the ill-judged overtaking attempt directly led to the collision. Sadly, the impact claimed the life of the tricycle operator on the spot, leaving his passengers in critical condition,” Adebayo stated.

LASTMA officials swiftly rescued the injured and handed them over to police officers from the Ikotun Division, who conveyed them to the General Hospital, Isolo, for urgent treatment.

The driver of the Toyota Venza reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash. Police have since launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspect.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the victims’ recovery. He also issued a stern warning to motorists against reckless driving, especially overtaking on bridges where visibility and control are limited.

“This unfortunate incident is a grim reminder of the deadly consequences of impatience and disregard for traffic laws,” Bakare-Oki said. “Road users must embrace discipline, foresight, and strict compliance with safety protocols to prevent such avoidable tragedies.”
