The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into popular Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, better known as KWAM 1, over allegations of unruly behaviour that reportedly disrupted the safe operation of an aircraft at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The move follows an official petition submitted by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM. The incident, said to have occurred on August 5, 2025, is alleged to be in breach of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023, which prohibit any conduct that compromises safety within the aviation environment.
According to the petition, KWAM 1’s actions during the incident were deemed a potential threat to the safe and secure operation of the flight, prompting the regulatory body to seek immediate police intervention.
Responding to the complaint, the IGP has directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to commence a full-scale investigation aimed at unravelling the circumstances surrounding the fracas. The Police say the probe will be thorough, impartial, and geared towards ensuring that justice is served without fear or favour.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to safeguarding lives and property within Nigeria’s aviation sector,” said DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer. “We will continue to work closely with the NCAA and other stakeholders to strengthen aviation security and enforce strict compliance with aviation laws.”
The latest development adds a new twist to an already heated debate over passenger conduct in Nigerian airports. Just last week, a separate altercation involving a commercial airline passenger drew public outrage after flight attendants were reportedly assaulted during boarding.
With the police investigation now underway, aviation authorities and security agencies are expected to step up enforcement measures aimed at curbing disruptive behaviour on flights and ensuring passengers strictly adhere to aviation safety regulations.
For KWAM 1, a celebrated figure in Nigerian music for over four decades, the investigation marks a rare brush with regulatory and law enforcement scrutiny. Whether the allegations will lead to formal charges remains to be seen, but the Police have assured that the outcome will be made public once the probe is concluded.
