MHR Whingan’s Wife, Tosin, Leads Clean-Up Badagry Initiative, Champions Waste-to-Wealth Agenda for a Greener Future

The drive to transform Badagry into a hub of environmental sustainability received a major boost over the weekend as Hon. Mrs. Tosin Whingan, wife of the Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, led a high-powered delegation to advance the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative and its flagship Waste-to-Wealth programme.

Mrs. Whingan, who serves as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Initiative, was in Badagry on an official working visit where she engaged stakeholders on strategies to promote a circular economy and innovative waste management solutions across the constituency.

The engagement brought together board members of the Initiative, representatives of Green Recyclers led by Mr. Seyi Olatunbosun, officials from the Office of Hon. Sesi Whingan led by Amb. Hassan Mihode Hammed, as well as the Initiative’s Waste Management Consultant, Hon. Hunpatin Seyido.

At the heart of discussions was the establishment of a modern recycling center in Badagry – a landmark project expected to create jobs, generate income, and empower residents by turning everyday waste into valuable resources.

During the visit, Mrs. Whingan and her team toured critical waste management sites, including the Ikoga dumpsite, where preliminary efforts are already underway to transform the location into a green, eco-friendly zone through public-private collaboration. She also unveiled plans for a broad sensitization campaign targeting market women, youth, and community leaders, designed to instill sustainable waste practices across Badagry’s communities.

Speaking during the engagement, Mrs. Whingan emphasized the vision behind the initiative:

“The Clean-Up Badagry Initiative is not just about cleaning our environment, it is about transforming waste into wealth, creating opportunities for our people, and building a sustainable future for generations to come. Together with our partners, we are laying the foundation for an eco-friendly Badagry that thrives on innovation and community empowerment.”

The visit also served to strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders, paving the way for the accelerated implementation of the recycling project and other environment-focused interventions across the constituency.

Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, who doubles as the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative, lauded his wife’s leadership role in driving the vision. He reiterated his support for the project, describing it as central to his broader mission of community development and environmental preservation.

“Sustainable waste management is at the core of our vision for Badagry. What my wife and her team are championing will not only protect our ecosystem but also empower our people economically. This is how we build a future-ready constituency,” Hon. Sesi Whingan affirmed.

With the Waste-to-Wealth agenda gaining traction, the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative has set its sights on positioning the ancient town as a model for green innovation in Nigeria, where environmental responsibility and community empowerment go hand in hand.
