Hunpe Bemoans Poor Electricity, Declares Era of Estimated Bills Over as Badagry Gets 70,000 Meters

Relief may finally be in sight for thousands of households in Badagry as the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Hunpe-Adande Babatunde, has announced the commencement of a large-scale metering programme set to end the controversial era of estimated electricity billing in the area.

Hon. Hunpe, who received a detailed briefing on the initiative earlier today, disclosed that 70,000 prepaid electricity meters will be distributed across the council area under a project spearheaded by DamLaw Energy Concept.

The Project Coordinator, Mr. Anthony Adekunle Ogungbemi, and the Project Supervisor, Engr. Daniel Adedokun, led the delegation to the council secretariat to present the roll-out plan.

Describing the development as a “milestone” for Badagry, Hunpe said it would not only address the lingering grievances over arbitrary estimated bills but also stimulate socio-economic growth.

“The distribution of prepaid meters to our people is a welcome development. For too long, beyond the challenge of epileptic power supply, our people have been shortchanged by the estimated billing system. A steady and reliable power supply is a catalyst for economic development – it empowers our people, supports local businesses, attracts investment, and ultimately transforms communities,” he stated.

As part of the implementation process, a comprehensive sensitization programme will be held on Thursday, August 14. The session will bring together traditional rulers, community development committees, religious leaders, youth groups, and other critical stakeholders to explain the project’s objectives, benefits, and execution strategy.

The DamLaw Energy team was received alongside other key council officials, including Vice-Chairman Hon. Akeem Adeyemi; Chief of Staff Mr. Taiwo Towolawi; Chief Security Adviser CSP Johnson Adagba (Rtd.); Council Manager Mrs. Olusanya Mary Abosede; Council Treasurer Comrade Olugbenga Hunponu; and Council Engineer Engr. Fadairo Ibrahim Olusegun.

With the metering programme now underway, Badagry residents are hopeful that fairer billing and improved electricity access will soon become a reality.
