The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false a viral message claiming that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will resume on May 27, 2025.
Although INEC issued its rebuttal as far back as May 4th and has not released any new updates on the resumption of voter registration, this report by Badagry Today is necessary to counter the viral fake news about voter registration, which continues to gain traction and has been widely believed—even by some political leaders—on social media platforms
In a statement issued Since May 4th, INEC clarified that it has not fixed any date for the resumption of CVR, nor for related services such as the transfer of voter registration or replacement of lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). No new update by INEC till date.
The Commission urged members of the public to disregard the circulating message, which it described as fake and anonymous.
“There is no truth to the claim that CVR and other associated services will resume on May 27,” said Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman. “The Commission has not made any such announcement.”
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and assured Nigerians that, in keeping with its tradition, any official date for the resumption of CVR will be communicated publicly and comprehensively. Updates will be shared through the Commission’s official channels, including its social media platforms.
The Commission also warned citizens to be cautious about unverified information, especially as the country prepares for future electoral activities.
“Whenever the time comes, the public will be duly informed,” Oyekanmi added.
This clarification comes amid growing anticipation from eligible voters hoping to register ahead of upcoming elections. INEC's latest message is a reminder to rely solely on credible and official sources for electoral information.
