Navy Delivers Free Medical Outreach to Over 500 Residents in Badagry, Marks 69th Anniversary

As part of activities marking its 69th anniversary, the Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy in Badagry, Lagos, on Wednesday brought free medical care to over 500 indigent residents of Topo community in Badagry.

Flagging off the outreach at Topo, Commanding Officer of FOB Badagry, Navy Captain Leye Omotayo, said the initiative was not just a celebration gesture but also a demonstration of the Navy’s commitment to humanitarian service and its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to its host communities.

“This outreach, in line with our CSR mandate, aims to provide much-needed medical attention to the people of Topo, especially the underprivileged,” Capt. Omotayo stated. “Our medical team is offering free consultations, blood pressure checks, and distributing essential drugs to those in need.”

He emphasized that the Navy’s role extends beyond maritime defense, highlighting the importance of supporting communities like Topo where many naval personnel reside.

“We initially planned for around 250 residents, but the turnout has surpassed 500. Thankfully, we have the capacity to attend to everyone,” he added, commending the medical team and partner organizations for their dedication.

The outreach, he noted, also reflects the Navy’s alignment with the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla’s Strategic Directive 06-23, which emphasizes both national security and community engagement.

Among those present was Chief Michael Avoseh, the traditional ruler of Topo community, who was also a beneficiary of the outreach. He expressed deep gratitude to the Navy, noting it was the first time such a gesture had reached the community.

“I sent the town crier out yesterday to inform everyone,” Chief Avoseh said. “I’m happy to see that our people turned up and benefited from this rare kindness.”

Community Secretary, Mr. Matthew Olusegun, also praised the initiative, revealing that many in the area struggle to afford basic healthcare. “Some people can’t even buy paracetamol, let alone visit a hospital. This outreach is a huge relief,” he said.

Mrs. Victoria Avoseh, another beneficiary who received treatment for typhoid, shared her appreciation. “This is a great help to us. We hope the Navy makes this a regular initiative.”
