The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State has declared its readiness to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming July 12, 2025 local government elections, vowing to repeat its 2023 presidential election triumph in the state.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Thursday, the state secretary of the Labour Party, Sam Okpala, confirmed that the party would field candidates in all 57 councils across Lagos — comprising the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

“We are on top of the situation. Preparations are in top gear, and we’re leaving no stone unturned,” Okpala said. “We will be fielding candidates in all the 57 councils. Screening for our councillorship aspirants is scheduled for this Saturday, and chairmanship aspirants will be screened on May 14.”

Okpala expressed confidence that Lagosians were ready to rally behind the Labour Party again, just as they did during the 2023 presidential election when LP’s candidate, Peter Obi, stunned many by defeating APC’s Bola Tinubu in Lagos — a state long considered a stronghold of the ruling party. Obi secured 582,454 votes, leading in major local governments including Ikeja, Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Amuwo-Odofin, and Kosofe.

“We believe Lagos is for the Labour Party. We did it in 2023, and we are going to do it again,” Okpala declared.
