Federal University of Technology Badagry

The dream of establishing a Federal University of Technology in Badagry, Lagos State moved closer to reality on Tuesday, as the House of Representatives passed the enabling bill for its third reading.

The bill, which now proceeds to the Senate for concurrence, is seen as a major stride in expanding access to tertiary education in Lagos State and addressing the rising number of Nigerian students seeking university admission abroad.

Facilitated by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, who represents Badagry Federal Constituency and serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), the bill was sponsored by Rt. Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, Member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Finance. It was presented for third reading on May 6, 2025, by the House Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere.

During earlier deliberations in March, Hon. Faleke made a strong case for the bill, noting the urgent need for a federal institution focused on science and technology in Lagos. He cited the overwhelming demand for university placements across the state and the growing trend of students turning to neighboring Benin Republic in search of quality education.

“Lagos is long overdue for another federal institution — one that will focus on building technological capacity and retaining talent within our borders,” Hon. Faleke said. “This university will not only provide more opportunities but will also help reduce the exodus of our students to foreign institutions.”

Hon. Whingan, who has championed the project since the beginning of the 10th Assembly, welcomed the progress with gratitude and optimism. He described the bill’s advancement as a “victory for the youth” and a “historic milestone” for Badagry.

“With the bill moving to the Senate, we are closer than ever to turning this vision into a reality,” Hon. Whingan said. “It’s not just about a university in Badagry — it’s about creating a future where our young people can thrive through access to world-class education and innovation.”

Once signed into law, the proposed university is expected to become a center for technological research, entrepreneurship, and academic excellence — with a long-term impact on both the local economy and Nigeria’s educational landscape.

The bill’s passage marks a significant win for education advocates in Lagos and sets the stage for what could be the state’s next major academic institution.
