Tragedy struck at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, when a Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, was allegedly set ablaze by his wife during a heated domestic dispute.
According to Sahara Reporters, Haruna, a medical doctor and Regimental Medical Officer attached to the 6 Battalion, reportedly suffered severe burns after his wife, said to be a nurse, doused him with petrol and set him on fire in their home.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the incident on his X handle on Tuesday, said the tragic event occurred on September 22, 2025.
Sources revealed that the argument between the couple escalated violently, leading to the fatal attack. “The officer had a heated argument with his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna, who poured petrol on him and ignited it,” one source said.
Lt. Haruna was first treated at the Military Reference Section within the barracks and later transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries.
“The officer sustained severe burns and was initially stabilized at the MRS before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further treatment, but unfortunately, he did not survive,” the source added.
The suspect has since been arrested and is currently in custody as military authorities continue investigations into the shocking incident.
Efforts to reach the Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Onyechi Appolonia Anele, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
