Onilude Commissions Four Major Projects, Empowers 250 Residents on Day One of Valedictory Programme

The outgoing Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Segun Onilude, kicked off his three-day valedictory programme on a high note, commissioning four major capital projects and empowering 250 residents with financial support.

The first day of the farewell activities, which run from July 1 to 3, saw the unveiling of significant legacy projects—designed to improve staff welfare, enhance community infrastructure, and stimulate local commerce.

Among the projects commissioned were the Sunny Ajose Staff Quarters, a 20-room block of self-contained apartments for council staff; the newly completed Cinema/Dansu Road; and the Moses Owolabani Shopping Arcade. The council also officially renamed the former Inspectorate Road after the first chairman of the local government, Chief J.J. Gbededo, in honour of his pivotal role in securing the land on which the council stands.

Addressing guests at the event, Onilude reflected on his journey in office since 2017, noting that his administration had consistently prioritized people-focused development.

"Since 2017 when we assumed office, we have done our best to build roads, construct landmark buildings, and improve community welfare. The most important thing is not just to start well, but to end well. And today, we can stand tall and proud," he said.

He emphasized that unlike some political leaders who shy away from public engagement towards the end of their tenure, his administration remains visible and confident.

"Some disappear as their term ends, but here we are, engaging with our people—without fear or security escort—because we are proud of our record," Onilude said.

The outgoing chairman expressed gratitude to party ward executives and local leaders who supported his emergence and stood by him throughout his time in office.

“I give it to the ward and LGA excos who voted for me, and the leaders who later supported me. Today, I can boldly say ‘Gbogbo leaders lo wa leyin mi’ (All the leaders are behind me),” he added.

Onilude also highlighted the strategic importance of the newly built staff quarters, noting that it would ease accommodation challenges faced by civil servants posted to Badagry from distant locations.

“We named it the Sunny Ajose Staff Quarters in honour of Chief Akinsanya Sunny Ajose, a former Lagos State Head of Service, who served with distinction,” he said.

He called on civil servants to take greater ownership of their environment and proposed the institution of regular sanitation activities to ensure cleanliness.

In a show of community support, Onilude announced the disbursement of ₦50,000 each to 250 residents to support small businesses and livelihood improvement.

“This is a token of appreciation to the people. It may not be much, but it shows that we are not stopping—right up till the last day,” he said.

The Council Manager, Mrs. M.A. Olusanya, described the chairman as a compassionate and people-oriented leader who prioritized staff welfare.

“Our chairman is a man of empathy. He addressed our challenges, mentored many, and led with a fatherly heart,” she said.

Council Treasurer, Comrade Gbenga Hunponu, praised Onilude’s leadership style, describing him as a visionary, a unifier, and a humble trailblazer deserving of higher political responsibility.

“He is a change-maker who builds relationships and remains committed to people-centered governance,” Hunponu said.

Also speaking at the event, NYSC member Miss Dike Charity commended the council for its support to corps members, including the provision of accommodation and project assistance.

“We’re grateful to the chairman for his kindness and for providing a corps lodge. It really made a difference during our service year,” she noted.

The event was attended by political stakeholders, council staff, residents, and traditional rulers, setting the stage for two more days of project commissioning and farewell celebrations as Hon. Onilude concludes his second term in office.
