All roads led to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat on Acme Road, Ikeja, on Tuesday as the ruling party in Lagos State officially kicked off its campaign for the July 12 Local Government Elections.
At the colourful ceremony, party flags were formally handed over to the 57 chairmanship candidates and their running mates, alongside 376 councillorship candidates, marking the start of what the party described as a critical grassroots engagement.
The atmosphere was electric. APC supporters thronged the venue in various customised party outfits, waving brooms—the symbol of the party—with chants and cheers that echoed through the air. The candidates, uniformly dressed in matching campaign attires, stood united in confidence and readiness.
Security operatives, led by the Lagos State Police Command, maintained a firm but orderly presence, ensuring that only accredited party members and guests had access to the expansive secretariat.
The Chairman of the powerful Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi, led other prominent members including Alhaji Mutiu Are, Princess Sarah Sosan, and Senator Musiliu Obanikoro to the event. They were joined by key members of the Lagos State Executive Council, including the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mrs. Salu-Hundeyin expressed the governor’s unwavering support for all APC candidates, urging them to serve the people diligently if elected.
“This event is more than a flag presentation—it is a call to service,” she said. “We are with every candidate on this journey. Let the campaigns reflect our values as progressives. We are not just campaigning to win, we are here to transform lives.”
APC Lagos State Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, praised the maturity and discipline shown by party aspirants during and after the primaries. He revealed that 475 people contested for chairmanship tickets, but only 57 emerged.
“We are proud of the reconciliation efforts already underway,” Ojelabi said. “We urge our candidates to carry everyone along and deliver on the expectations of our people in education, health, infrastructure, and youth development.”
In a passionate address, Prince Olusi reminded the flag bearers of the sacred responsibility ahead of them. “This is an opportunity to promote the ideals of our party,” he said. “Let service, not self-interest, guide your actions.”
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, urged party members to take the July 12 election seriously, noting that the outcome could influence future elections, including the 2027 general election.
“The party is supreme,” Obasa declared. “We must obey the party and support all our candidates wholeheartedly. Let us remain united.”
Chairman of the APC Campaign Committee, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, tasked candidates and the Local Campaign Organising Committees (LOCs) to begin robust mobilisation efforts across wards and communities, noting that all campaigns must end by July 9, as stipulated in the electoral guidelines.
He directed each council’s LOC to be jointly headed by the APC LGA chairman and the incumbent council chairman, and to work closely with interest groups to ensure massive voter turnout.
