A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on the National Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu, citing a conflict of interest in the awarding of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway contract.
Speaking on Saturday, the group’s leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, criticized the president for awarding the contract to Hitech Construction Company, owned by billionaire Gilbert Chagoury, whom he described as a close associate of Tinubu. The criticism came during the commissioning of the 30-kilometre Phase 1, Section 1 of the highway.
Olaitan accused the president of sidelining due process in the contract award, saying it lacked transparency and competitive bidding. According to him, the project appears to be designed to benefit Eko Atlantic City — a privately owned development in Lagos linked to Chagoury.
“All President Tinubu is doing is building a road to his own Atlantic City,” Olaitan said. “That road was not advertised for public bidding. It is a national shame. If we had a truly independent and vibrant National Assembly, they would have begun impeachment proceedings immediately.”
He further questioned the rationale behind commissioning a small stretch of the highway, suggesting that the rest of the coastal road may never be completed once the portion leading to Eko Atlantic is done.
The faction leader urged lawmakers to act swiftly and initiate impeachment if they are not themselves compromised.
President Tinubu, during the commissioning, had praised Hitech and Chagoury, describing them as symbols of courage and determination.
“To the contractors and my partner in daring, it was tough for us… We came together to tame the Atlantic,” Tinubu had said.
