The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has released the official breakdown of successful councillorship aspirants screened across the state’s 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.
The screening exercise, which concluded over the weekend, was part of the party’s internal process to vet and approve aspirants vying for councillorship positions across all wards. According to a document obtained by Badagry Today, the APC leadership also issued a directive mandating local councils to prioritize cleared female aspirants in the final nomination process.
In line with the party’s commitment to gender inclusion, the number of female aspirants to be considered in each council varies depending on the number of female contestants who participated and passed the screening exercise. While some councils have been directed to consider one female candidate, others were instructed to give room for two, three, or even four women in their final lists.
“The decision is in keeping with our drive to increase female participation in governance and ensure fair representation at the grassroots level,” a senior APC official at the state secretariat told Badagry Today. “This is a clear signal to all party structures that gender inclusion is no longer optional—it is a necessity.”
Party sources disclosed that the move has been welcomed in many quarters, especially among women leaders and youth groups, who have long advocated for increased female representation in local politics.
As the party gears up for the final stages of its candidate selection, stakeholders across the state are expected to begin internal harmonization processes in the coming days, balancing political interests with the new gender directives.
The Lagos APC has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting transparent and credible primaries while ensuring that the most viable and loyal candidates emerge to fly the party’s flag in the July local government polls.
