The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has grilled popular Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, over activities surrounding her daughter’s high-profile wedding, which held last month.
The actress, fondly known as the “Queen Mother” by fans, disclosed her encounter with the anti-graft agency via a statement on her Instagram page on Tuesday. According to her, the EFCC invited her for questioning while she was in the United Kingdom, and she promptly honoured the invitation upon returning to Nigeria, appearing before investigators on Monday, May 5, 2025.
She revealed that the interrogation focused in part on scenes from her daughter Priscilla Ojo’s glamorous wedding to Tanzanian singer Juma Jux, particularly moments when guests were seen spraying both naira and foreign currencies.
“I was asked several questions regarding my personal background, career, and businesses,” she wrote. “The EFCC also presented videos from my daughter’s wedding where attendees were seen spraying money — both Naira and Dollars.”
Iyabo Ojo stated that she was unaware that spraying foreign currencies was prohibited in Nigeria and believed, like many others, that only the abuse or defacement of the Naira was punishable by law.
“I was surprised to learn that spraying any currency — including foreign ones — is also considered an offense,” she said, adding that EFCC officials made it clear that spraying or placing money on individuals during celebrations contravenes financial regulations.
Following the experience, the actress issued a public caution, advising Nigerians to steer clear of currency spraying at events to avoid similar legal trouble.
“I now understand better and wish to advise everyone — no matter how grand the celebration — to avoid spraying any currency. It’s not worth the risk,” she added.
Iyabo’s daughter’s wedding, which garnered significant attention on social media, featured several high-profile guests, extravagant displays, and a cross-cultural celebration of love between Nigeria and Tanzania.
The EFCC is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. However, the development underscores the agency’s continued crackdown on financial misconduct, particularly as it relates to the abuse of legal tender during social events.
