Tragedy Strikes: 20 Athletes Dead in Fatal Road Accident After Sports Festival in Ogun

A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of at least 20 athletes from the Kano State contingent, who were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The fatal crash occurred at Dakatsalle Bridge in the Kura Local Government Area of Kano State on Saturday. According to reports, the bus conveying about 30 athletes plunged off the bridge, resulting in the death of 20 passengers and leaving several others with varying degrees of injuries.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, said, “As I am talking to you now, we have counted 19 dead bodies.” He added that emergency responders and local authorities were still working at the scene.

Ado Salisu, a former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), also confirmed that victims were being rushed to Kura General Hospital for urgent medical attention.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran, said the corps had received a report of the accident but was yet to verify the full number of casualties.

“We just received the report of the accident, so I cannot confirm the exact number of deaths and injuries at the moment,” he said.

The tragic incident has cast a dark cloud over what was supposed to be a celebratory return from the National Sports Festival, plunging Kano State and the nation’s sports community into mourning.
