A major oil theft operation was foiled in the early hours of Monday, May 26, 2025, as operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Badagry Division, seized a large cache of petroleum products during a patrol.
Acting on credible intelligence from local residents, NSCDC officers stormed a suspected hideout around 4:50 a.m., catching the perpetrators off guard. The suspects fled the scene, abandoning their illicit haul and equipment.
Led by Chief Superintendent of Corps Ekunola Gbenga, the operation uncovered seventy (70) 25-litre kegs filled with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). Also recovered were a 15-litre keg, a 10-litre keg, six (6) 5-litre kegs, 250 large bottles, 70 plastic bottles, three small sacks filled with PMS, a motorcycle seat, and a storage tank suspected to have been used in the smuggling operation.
The NSCDC believes the criminals had planned to transport the stolen fuel across the border into neighbouring countries through the Badagry corridor. Their plans, however, were abruptly disrupted by the swift response of the patrol team.

Reacting to the seizure, the Lagos State NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro, praised the officers for their vigilance and quick action. He reiterated the Corps’ firm stance against oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other acts of economic sabotage.
“This successful operation is a strong message to those who think they can profit by sabotaging our economy,” Keshinro said. “It also reflects the commitment of our Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, who has consistently called for greater protection of the nation’s critical infrastructure.”
He added that the Corps is stepping up intelligence and surveillance, especially during festive seasons when criminal activities tend to spike.
Investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects, Keshinro assured, as the NSCDC continues its efforts to safeguard national assets and hold offenders accountable.
