The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has distanced itself from the Labour Party’s primary elections ahead of the July 12 local government polls, citing internal divisions within the party.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum held in Ikeja on Thursday, LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), revealed that the commission received separate invitations from three different factions of the Labour Party in the state — a situation that raised concerns over the party’s unity and credibility.
“Three factions of the Labour Party in Lagos invited us to observe their primaries,” she said. “We couldn’t honour any of the invitations due to the clear division within the party.”
Justice Ighile explained that LASIEC could not legitimise any faction over the others in such a fractured setting, stressing that the commission must remain neutral and avoid being entangled in intra-party disputes.
As the confusion lingers, she added that LASIEC is awaiting guidance from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on how to proceed in dealing with the party’s situation.
The development casts uncertainty over Labour Party’s participation in the upcoming elections and raises broader concerns about internal cohesion ahead of a critical electoral season in the state.
