A tragic road accident on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, claimed the lives of a father and his teenage daughter along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway near Amibo Ubakala in Abia State.
The fatal crash, which occurred around noon, involved a green Toyota Highlander SUV with registration number UWN 314AR and a red Mack truck loaded with iron scraps, bearing registration number PHC 971ZT.
According to eyewitnesses, the SUV, carrying a family of six and heading from Abia Tower toward Aba, collided with the rear end of the stationary trailer. The impact was devastating.
The driver of the Highlander, 60-year-old Chidi Innocent from Enugu State, and his 18-year-old daughter, Onyinyechi Innocent, died instantly. Their bodies have been deposited at Godspeed Mortuary in Mgbarakuma, Ubakala.
Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were quickly rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia. In a harrowing twist, the children’s mother was trapped under the truck for a period before being rescued by emergency responders.
The driver of the trailer, 33-year-old Gideon Effiong Udofia from Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, has been taken into police custody as authorities begin investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Road safety officials have urged motorists to exercise caution and remain vigilant, especially when navigating expressways.
